Schisandra

What is Schisandra?

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is an herb used in the traditional Chinese medicine, where it is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs. Schisandra is a famous tonic and restorative adaptogen, what means it can restore the energy levels of the body and reverse the destructive effects of stress, while enhancing body's ability to coop with it. In China Schisandra had been traditionally used by both royals and master herbalists and at the moment it is official in both the current Chinese and Japanese pharmacopoeias.

What is Schisandra used for?

Schisandra is an energy tonic, what means it helps to improve overall health and boost energy levels, revitalizing virtually all systems of the body and restoring the current of life energy.

Due to its adaptogenic properties, Schisandra helps to reduce fatigue, boost physical and mental performance, build up endurance and stamina, strengthening body and mind in face of modern life's challenges.

It is often recommended for people who need greater levels of energy, such as sportsmen.

And of course, Schisandra is an excellent choice when you need to combat stress or recover from stress-induced fatigue and mental sluggishness!

By making you less stressed and more peaceful, Schisandra can relieve insomnia and improve quality of sleep. Because of its anti-anxiety effects, Schisandra quiets the spirit and calms the heart. It also supports memory and protects brain cells from damage.

Schisandra has been shown to improve mental clarity, concentration and focus, while reducing anxiety and nervous exhaustion. Thus it can be a helpful natural medicine for the depression treatment, too.

Schisandra tonifies central nervous system, increasing the speed of nerve impulses, what in turn leads to quicker and stronger reflexes.

Being a liver tonic, it also increases metabolic rate, helping the conversion of food calories into kilojoules of energy!

It also protects and detoxifies the liver, being very effective in reversing even serious liver damages, for example hepatitis.

This herb is good for the kidneys as well, it balances body liquids and can be helpful in cases of excessive thirst and sweating, urinary incontinence and the frequent urges to urinate.

It also improves blood circulation, helps heart function and has antioxidant qualities.

Schisandra is thought helpful in the prevention of sight and hearing decline and restoration of the normal work of these vital sensory organs.

Schisandra is also used to treat allergies and respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough and shortness of breath, and skin conditions, like hives and eczema.

Schisandra can decrease blood pressure, acting as a vasodilator, and normalize blood sugar levels.

On  top of that, Schisandra is also an aphrodisiac, helping to raise the sexual drive both in men and women!

How does Schisandra work?

Schisandra contains an amazing array of biologically active compounds, which, working together, create its remedial effects. Its stimulating effects are supposedly attributed to the increase of the production of dopamine, brains' "feel good" substance, responsible for the physical and mental energy and endurance, as well as for the feelings of reward.
