What is Valerian?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is an herb used since antiquity as a natural relaxant and insomnia herbal remedy. For its powerful anti-anxiety qualities it's sometimes referred to as "Nature's Valium".
What is Valerian used for?
Many cultures used valerian root in their folk medicines to promote healthy relaxation and aid sleep.
Valerian is venerated for its ability to relax the central nervous system and relieve muscle tension.
Its sedative qualities are used in the therapy of anxiety, stress, mood swings, sleep disorders, tension-related pains, irritability, migraines, restlessness, nervousness, premenstrual and menopausal problems.
It is also used in the treatment of stomach pain, intestinal colic or cramps and irritable bowel syndrome.
Valerian works quickly, without withdrawal or discontinuation problems, what makes it healthy, non-toxic and non-addictive alternative to the pharmaceutical pills.
How does Valerian work?
Valerian contains numerous active compounds, but its sedative effect is considered to occur largely as a result of its action on GABA receptors - mechanism similar to that of benzodiazepines (common anti-anxiety pharmaceutical medicines). GABA is a "brain calm" substance, so the more of it you have in your brain, the more peaceful and laid-back you feel.
Availability and dosage
Valerian root extract is available in various forms: as tablets, capsules, tinctures or even teas. As a relaxant: 50-100mg twice daily. As an insomnia herbal remedy: 150-300mg before bedtime.
